Daughter of the Blood by Anne Bishop

"The Darkness has had a Prince for a long, long time. Now the Queen is coming..."
Daughter of the Blood is the story of Janelle Angelline. A young witch born into a famliy clouded by secrets and mysteries and horrors unimagined. A young girl who can't do even the basic craft expected of the Grand daughter of the Queen of the island of Challiot. A young girl whose fantasies of riding unicorns, flying on dragon back and travelling beyond the veil to the Shadow Realm see her constantly in and out of a special hospital, Beldon Mor, a place of rest for the high strung aristo witches of Challiot and the surrounding areas. A hospital that holds a dark, evil secret that must be protected at all costs.
Janelle is the light around which this richly embroided story dances. Janelle is Witch. Dreams made Flesh. She is the Black-Jewelled Queen the aristo's ad others have been waiting for, dreaming of, for thousands of years.
Among those who wait for their chance to serve are three men; Damon Sadi, the Black-Jewelled Warlord Pince, a pleasure slave in the courts of High Priestess Dorothea Sa Diablo, the slave raised to believe he was unwanted and rejected by his long lost father.
Dark winged Eryien Warlord Prince Lucivar Yaslana, slave and warrior, who wields the Ebon-Grey and is second only to Damon in strength and vicious power, and the final man, Satean Sa Diablo, Warlord Prince and the only other Black-Jewelled man to ever have walked the realms. It's 50,000 years since he last stood in sunlight. He is The High Priest of the Hourglass, The High Lord of Hell and Witch is the daughter of his soul.
Political intrigue abounds in this erotic fantasy thriller. Friendships, family relationships, dreams and hopes are tried, twisted and destroyed. This book serves as both an introduction to this sensual world and as a harbinger of what is to come as Witch's blood is spilled and the trap springs shut.
Violence and innocence walk hand in hand in Daughter of the Blood and as the story unfolds you find yourself swept into a world that turns convential expectations firmly on it's head.
In it's review of Daughter of the Blood, Romantic Times gave it a 4.5 Star rating, calling it "A uniquely realized fantasy filled with vibrant colors and rich textures."
I can only agree. For those of you who are not fans of fantasy give Daughter of the Blood a try. I can't imagine you're anymore immune to Anne Bishiops weaving of spellcraft, love, lust and betrayal than any one else who has read this book.
In closing, I'll leave you with another testimonal I saw on Anne Bishops website, this one from Library Journal which I think sums Book One of the Black Jewel Trilogy - and all three of the novels to be honest - up perfectly.
"Lavishly sensual…a richly detailed world based on a reversal of standard genre clichés.”
