Kick Off Your Heels - Confessions of a shoe-a-holic!

Soul mate; Reality or torture Device

August 27th 2008 13:10
Soul Mate. Two little words; one big concept. The belief that someone, somewhere is holding the key to your heart, and your dream house. All you have to do is find them. So, where is this person? And if you love someone and it didn’t work out does that mean they weren’t your soul mate? Were they just a runner-up contestant in this game show called: Happily Ever After?" is there really the one out there for everyone?- Carrie Bradshaw

A few nights ago, a couple of friends and I were hanging around discussing our thoughts on soul mates. While some believed theirs was out there, most were sceptical and insisted that ‘the one’ was a romantic myth, created by movie directors & kept alive by women’s hopes and dreams.

Being rather cynical of love myself, I was one of the first to jump and object to the concept of soul mates. The very idea that only one individual has the ability to complete you is absolutely ridiculous! It’s unattainable!! We’re being set up to fail! How can we believe that out of a world of over 6.8 Billion people, only one person has the capacity of loving us the way we truly long to be loved? How can we believe that the world offers only one person who possesses all the personality traits we seek in our long term lover? And, if there is only one person... how do we know the one we end up with, is that ‘one’?

Is it really possible that a meaningful relationship will not endure unless you find your perfect match? And what are the odds of finding this partner? What happens if you never meet the one? Does that mean your real ‘one’ is with the wrong ‘one’? And would their relationship be destined to failure, simply because fate would have it no other way? Are you incomplete without the ‘one’? And if you never find your soul mate, can you ever truly be happy?

A friend of mine believes that different lovers have different purposes in life...some teach you to be stronger, others teach you to be wise, and some are just there at your time of need...but in her opinion, people have multiple soul-mates. That is, different loves at different stages of their life- and as they evolve, they simply let go of the old and find the new. While it isn’t my favourite view on love, I can’t help but admire its realistic approach.

For those who have been hurt, men are like busses, if you miss one- another will be around in five minutes. Others believe there are many fish in the sea; and if perch isn’t your style, barramundi may very well be...

Most like the security of going to bed each night with the thought that someone out there is waiting for them; waiting to hold them, and love them... just the way they desire. Then there is a crowd who are excited by the very thought that anyone out there could be theirs in a matter of days.

I guess what you believe doesn’t really matter; neither does the reasoning behind it. As long as you believe in something; Love might be tough but having that belief- whatever it may be- is what usually gets you through the long lonely days, the problems in relationships and the little bumps along the road. For those who have found their soul mates; keep them near, and as for people who don’t believe in soul mates; maybe when you fall in love you might change your mind... even if you won’t admit it aloud.
